The best Paul Skenes rookie cards, ranked (2026 prices)

The Paul Skenes rookie cards worth chasing, from his 1st Bowman auto to 2024 Topps Chrome Update, with 2026 sold prices for a market still settling.

By MLBTSDB · October 4, 2026 · Prices as of October 3, 2026

Paul Skenes has done in two seasons what most pitchers never do. Pittsburgh took him first overall out of LSU in the 2023 draft, he debuted on May 11, 2024, and he won the NL Rookie of the Year award that fall while finishing third in the Cy Young vote. In 2025 he won the Cy Young outright, unanimously, with a 1.97 ERA and 216 strikeouts over 187⅔ innings for a last-place team. He's only the third Pirate to win it.

That run has made him the rare pitcher the hobby treats like a franchise hitter. His cards have produced some of the biggest modern sales in the sport, led by a one-of-one 2024 Topps Chrome Update MLB Debut Patch autograph, carrying a patch from the jersey he wore in his first big-league game. An 11-year-old collector pulled it on Christmas morning 2024 from a hobby box his parents bought for about $320, turned down a Pirates offer that included 30 years of season tickets, and sold it through Fanatics Collect in March 2025 for $1.11 million. Among active players, only Mike Trout has had a card sell for more.

This market is young and still settling. Prices move with every start, base-card values have been volatile, and there are only two years of sales history to work from. Treat everything below as a snapshot, not a forecast.

How we ranked them

We weighed three things: how iconic the card is to collectors, how scarce it really is (print run, PSA population and gem rate), and what it sells for today. Prices are recent sold results, rounded into ranges. Gem rate is the share of PSA-graded copies that came back a PSA 10. For modern cards it runs far higher than for vintage, so the population count matters more than the rate.

His official rookie year is 2024, and only cards issued that year carry the RC logo: 2024 Topps Update, Topps Chrome Update, Bowman Chrome, Stadium Club and Topps Now among them. He isn't in 2024 Topps Series 1 or Series 2, whose checklists were set before his debut, so his first Topps flagship card came in Update. His 2023 Bowman Draft cards are prospect cards, not rookies, but the market treats his first Bowman Chrome autograph as his key card, so we rank two of them here with a clear label. Paper Bowman Draft and his high-school cards are in a section at the end. One-of-ones like the debut patch card are in a class of their own and aren't ranked.

PSA 10$1,000–$1,500
PSA 9$430–$960

Not a rookie card, but the card the market treats as Skenes' most important. It's his first Bowman Chrome autograph, and the "1st Bowman" auto is the card prospect collectors have chased for decades. When top prospects become stars, this is usually where the serious money goes, and Skenes has followed the pattern: the Superfractor one-of-one sold for $123,220, more than the Superfractor autograph from his rookie-year Chrome Update set.

The base version is more approachable. PSA 10s sold for $750 in June 2024 and $1,050 in April 2025, and guides put them at $1,200–$1,500 around his Rookie of the Year win. PSA 9 copies with a 10 autograph ranged from about $430 to $960 between late 2025 and April 2026. Roughly half of graded copies come back 10s, so condition isn't the obstacle; the price is set by demand, and it swings with how he pitches. Numbered refractor parallels, from /499 down to one-of-one, sit well above these numbers.

2.2024 Topps Chrome Update Rookie Autographs #RA-PS

2024 Topps Chrome Update

Recent sales
GradePrice
Refractor /199, PSA 10$1,900–$2,200
Refractor /499, PSA 10~$1,500
Base, raw$325–$400

The best autographed card from his actual rookie year. Topps Chrome Update arrived in November 2024, after his rookie season ended, at $129.99 a hobby box, and its rookie autographs pair the RC logo with a signature. Collectors who want a signed Skenes rookie rather than a signed prospect card start here.

Raw base copies sold for $325–$400 soon after release. The numbered refractors show where the demand sits now: a /499 refractor in PSA 10 sold for $1,500 in April 2025, and a /199 refractor in PSA 10 brought $1,900 in December 2025 and $2,200 after that. It ranks below the Bowman auto because the market has always paid a premium for the first Bowman signature.

3.2024 Topps Chrome Update #USC27 / #USC88

2024 Topps Chrome Update

Recent sales
GradePrice
X-Fractor, PSA 10$110–$240
Base, PSA 10~$100
Population:
1,468 PSA 10 (base, early 2025)

The main chrome rookie card, and the product that produced every headline Skenes card from his rookie year: the $1.11 million debut patch, and a Superfractor autograph one-of-one that sold for about $111,000. Skenes has two cards in the 200-card base set, #USC27 and #USC88. Checklists don't agree on which is the Rookie Debut subset and which is the regular rookie card, so check the number when you buy.

The base cards are plentiful. A PSA 10 #USC88 sold for about $100 in March 2025, when PSA had already graded nearly 1,500 tens. The parallels carry the value: X-Fractor PSA 10s have sold between roughly $110 and $240 through 2026, and numbered colors go much higher. For a clean, graded chrome rookie, this is the card most collectors pick, and with so many copies around there's no reason to overpay for a weakly centered one.

4.2024 Topps Update #US100

2024 Topps Update

Recent sales
GradePrice
PSA 10$69–$118
Raw~$5
Population:
about 1,870 PSA 10

His first card in a Topps flagship set. Because he wasn't in Series 1 or 2, Topps Update, released October 16, 2024, carries his base paper rookie at #US100. The same set has a Rookie Debut card at #US288, but #US100 is the one collectors mean by "the Topps rookie."

It's a mass-produced paper card, and prices reflect that. A raw copy has sold for about $5, and PSA 10s ranged from $69 to $118 on Fanatics Collect through September 2026, with the latest sale at the low end. It ranks above the Bowman Chrome rookie on brand and history, not scarcity. Gold, foilboard and numbered parallels exist for anyone who wants a scarcer version of the same card.

5.2023 Bowman Chrome Draft #BDC-14 (prospect card)

2023 Bowman Draft Chrome

Refractor, PSA 10$250–$500
Base, PSA 10$120–$200
Population:
3,993 graded · about 1,470 PSA 10
Gem rate:
37%

Not a rookie card. His first Bowman Chrome card, without the autograph. It's the unsigned prospect card collectors usually pick if they want only one, and it grades well below the paper version: only 37% of copies submitted to PSA came back 10s by late 2024.

Base PSA 10s sold for $117.60 in November 2024 and were guided at $120–$200 around that time. Refractor PSA 10s have been more active in 2026, selling between $252 and $500 from April to September. An image variation exists, showing him facing right; only 78 had been graded by late 2024.

6.2024 Bowman Chrome #31

2024 Bowman Chrome

His rookie-logo Bowman Chrome card, released in September 2024 with a 100-card base set. Don't confuse it with the 2024 Bowman Chrome Prospects card (#BCP-125), which has no RC logo. The rookie card isn't scarce: BaseballCardPedia estimates around 92,000 copies of each base card in the set, and sold prices haven't settled into a range we could confirm, so we've left them out.

It ranks here because it completes the Bowman story: 1st Bowman in 2023, then the official Bowman rookie in 2024. The product also has an image variation, rookie autographs and a My 1st Bowman autograph.

7.2024 Topps Now #179 MLB Debut

2024 Topps Now

Recent sales
GradePrice
PSA 10$48–$105
Population:
about 2,470 PSA 10

The card that marks the day itself. Topps Now prints cards to order for a short window after a moment, and the print run is public: 24,463 copies of his debut card. That's a known, fixed supply, but it isn't small, and it was ordered right after his debut, before he had proven anything.

PSA 10s sold between $48 and $105 from January to September 2026. It's the cheapest graded rookie-year card with a real story behind it, and a fair pick for fans who want the debut rather than a set card.

Before the rookies: Bowman Draft and his high-school cards

  • 2023 Bowman Draft #BD-14 (paper) — the paper version of his first Bowman card and his most-graded card. PSA had graded more than 8,300 by late 2024, and 56% were 10s, so gem copies are easy to find at about $50–$65.
  • 2019 Leaf Perfect Game National Showcase — his earliest card, from a high-school showcase, picturing him as a catcher when he was still a two-way player. It's unlicensed and exists in about 25 versions, from base cards to autographs and one-of-one plates. Base copies are inexpensive; autographs are not.

Which one should you buy?

  • The definitive card: 2023 Bowman Chrome Draft Prospect Autograph #CDA-PS. It isn't a rookie, but it's the card the market measures him by.
  • The scarcity play: a numbered refractor of the Chrome Update rookie autograph, or of the 1st Bowman auto. That's where the population counts drop into the dozens.
  • The best value: 2024 Topps Chrome Update #USC27 or #USC88 in PSA 10, a graded chrome rookie for about $100.
  • On a budget: a raw 2024 Topps Update #US100 for a few dollars, or a PSA 10 Topps Now debut card under $100.

Skenes moved into MLB The Show almost as quickly as he moved into the Pirates rotation. He has 15 cards across MLB The Show 23 through 26, topping out at 99 overall, including a 2025 Finest 99 in MLB The Show 25 and both a Pipeline 99 and a 2024 All-Star 99 in 24.
