The best Shohei Ohtani rookie cards, ranked (2026 prices)
The Shohei Ohtani rookie cards worth chasing, from 2018 Bowman Chrome #1 to Topps Update #US1 and the rookie autos, with 2026 sold prices and PSA pops.
By MLBTSDB · October 4, 2026 · Prices as of October 3, 2026
Shohei Ohtani is the most important baseball card subject of his generation, and 2026 prices prove it. He broke in with the Nippon-Ham Fighters in 2013, debuted for the Angels on March 29, 2018, and won AL Rookie of the Year that fall as a full-time two-way player. Since then he has won four MVP awards, every one of them unanimous (2021 and 2023 in the AL, 2024 and 2025 in the NL), produced the first 50-homer, 50-steal season in 2024, and won back-to-back World Series with the Dodgers in 2024 and 2025.
His market runs on two things the hobby loves most: chrome and autographs. In 2026 alone, his 2018 Bowman Chrome Superfractor sold privately for $3.365 million, his 2018 Topps Chrome Superfractor brought $2.56 million, and a 2018 Bowman Chrome autographed Red Refractor, one of five, sold at Goldin for $2.44 million. Even the plain Bowman Chrome rookie now sells for thousands in a PSA 10.
How we ranked them
We weighed three things: how iconic the card is to collectors, how scarce it really is (print run, PSA population and gem rate), and what it sells for today. Prices are recent sold results, mostly from the past three months, rounded into ranges. Where a card trades only a few times a year, we give the last public sale and its date. Gem rate is the share of PSA-graded copies that came back a PSA 10. Modern cards grade well, so for most of these the PSA 10 population is in the thousands; the scarcity lives in the parallels, short prints and autographs.
What counts as a rookie. Ohtani's MLB rookie cards are from 2018, his first big-league season, and every card below is one of them. His Japanese cards from 2013 and his 2017 Bowman prospect card came first, and they're covered at the end. Rookie autographs are ranked alongside the base cards. The one-of-one Superfractors are not: they're unique, they rarely trade, and they tell you about the ceiling of the market rather than about anything you can buy, so we mention them under the cards they belong to.
1.2018 Bowman Chrome Rookie Autographs #BCRA-SO
2018 Bowman Chrome (Rookie Autographs)
| Grade | Price |
|---|---|
| Orange /25, PSA 10 | $234,000 (Apr 2025) |
| Gold /50, PSA 10 | $138,000 (Apr 2025) |
| PSA 10 | $120,000 (Aug 2026) |
- Population:
- 61 PSA 10
Ohtani's first-year Bowman Chrome autograph is the card at the top of his market. Bowman Chrome is the brand collectors look to first for a star's key rookie, and this autograph shows him batting, the image most collectors prefer over the pitching shots. A PSA 10 sold for $120,000 in August 2026, and PSA has graded just 61 copies that high.
The parallels are where the records are. In April 2025 a Blue Refractor (/150) PSA 10 sold for $41,480, a Gold (/50) for $138,000 and an Orange (/25) for $234,000. Then in September 2026 a Red Refractor numbered 2/5, graded BGS 9.5 with a 9 autograph, drew 42 bids at Goldin and sold for $2.44 million, a remarkable price for a card that isn't one of a kind. One caution: 2018 Bowman also included a Chrome rookie autograph with a pitching image (#CRA-SO). It's a different card, and its PSA 10s have sold for around $21,000.
2.2018 Topps Chrome Rookie Autographs #RA-SO
2018 Topps Chrome (Rookie Autographs)
| Grade | Price |
|---|---|
| PSA 10 | $57,600 (Aug 2026) |
| PSA 9 | $25,500 (Apr 2026) |
- Population:
- 50 PSA 10 · 28 PSA 9
The Topps Chrome rookie autograph is the other half of Ohtani's top tier. It belongs to a 72-card insert set of rookie signatures applied on stickers, with one of the deepest parallel ladders of the year: Refractor (/499), Purple (/250), Blue and Blue Wave (/150), Green (/99), Gold and Gold Wave (/50), Orange (/25), Red and Red Wave (/5) and a one-of-one Superfractor.
The base version sold for $57,600 in a PSA 10 in August 2026 and $25,500 in a PSA 9 in April. The colors climb quickly from there. The most recent PSA 10 sales include about $42,000 for a Purple, $93,940 for a Blue Wave and $136,640 for a Gold, and a Red sold for $264,000 in a PSA 9. It ranks second only because the Bowman version is the one the market treats as the grail.
3.2018 Bowman Chrome #1
2018 Bowman Chrome
| Grade | Price |
|---|---|
| PSA 10 | $5,070–$8,020 |
| PSA 9 | $1,750–$2,970 |
- Population:
- 5,399 PSA 10 · 3,834 PSA 9
The best Ohtani rookie without an autograph, and it isn't close. Card #1 in 2018 Bowman Chrome shows him batting, and collectors have long preferred it to the pitching images on his Topps rookies. PSA 10s sold more than 200 times between July and early October 2026, for roughly $5,070 to $8,020. That's about four times what the Topps Chrome rookie brings in the same grade.
Its Superfractor set the tone for the whole market. Graded BGS 9.5 and carrying no autograph or memorabilia, it sold through Fanatics Collect's private sales network for $3.365 million in July 2026, the most ever paid for an Ohtani card.
4.2018 Topps Chrome Sapphire Edition #700
2018 Topps Chrome Sapphire Edition
| Grade | Price |
|---|---|
| PSA 10 | $28,500–$32,400 |
| PSA 9 | $14,500–$16,000 |
- Population:
- 128 PSA 10 · 24 PSA 9
Sapphire Edition is Topps's premium chrome version of its flagship checklist, printed in much smaller numbers than regular Topps Chrome. Ohtani's card uses the same photo of him on the mound as Topps #700 and Topps Chrome #150, so the appeal is purely the finish and the scarcity.
It's the scarcity pick among his unsigned rookies. PSA has graded only 128 PSA 10s, and they've sold for $28,500 to $32,400 since July 2026, with PSA 9s at $14,500 to $16,000. That's about 20 times a PSA 10 of the regular Topps Chrome card.
5.2018 Topps Chrome #150
2018 Topps Chrome
| Grade | Price |
|---|---|
| Refractor, PSA 10 | ~$6,100 |
| PSA 10 | $1,200–$1,940 |
| PSA 9 | $600–$1,010 |
- Population:
- 19,738 graded · 17,024 PSA 10
- Gem rate:
- 86.3%
Topps Chrome #150 is the mass-market chrome rookie, with the pitching photo used across his 2018 Topps cards. It's also one of the busiest cards in the hobby: PSA 10s sold 218 times between July and early October 2026, from $1,200 to about $1,940. That's double or more what they brought in January 2026, when PSA 10s were selling for $570 to $650.
Condition isn't the hard part. Of more than 19,700 copies PSA has graded, 86% are 10s. The premium is in the parallels: a base Refractor has sold for $6,100 in a PSA 10, and the Superfractor of this card brought $2.56 million in 2026.
6.2018 Topps Update #US1
2018 Topps Update
| Grade | Price |
|---|---|
| PSA 10 | $480–$710 |
| PSA 9 | $155–$255 |
- Population:
- 17,343 PSA 10 · 10,443 PSA 9
Ohtani's flagship Topps rookie leads off the 2018 Update set and shows him on the mound in a red jersey. Topps gave him card #1, a sign of how big his arrival was, and it remains the most widely owned of his rookies. More than 17,000 copies have earned a PSA 10, and 143 of them sold between July and early October 2026 for $480 to $710.
That's the case for it: it's the official flagship rookie at a fraction of the chrome price. It won't outrun the scarcer cards above it, but a PSA 10 for around $500 is the classic Ohtani rookie most collectors start with.
7.2018 Topps Series 2 #700 "With Bat" photo variation
2018 Topps Series 2
| Grade | Price |
|---|---|
| PSA 10 | $4,880–$6,100 |
| PSA 9 | $1,590–$2,130 |
- Population:
- 319 PSA 10 · 304 PSA 9
Ohtani's first card in the flagship Topps base set is Series 2 #700, and the standard version shows him pitching. It's plentiful, with nearly 12,000 PSA 10s, and those have sold for $695 to $1,000 over the past three months.
The short-printed photo variation of the same card shows him holding a bat, and it lives in a different market. Only 319 have reached a PSA 10, and they've sold for $4,880 to $6,100 since July. Sports Illustrated tracked it setting a then-record of $3,800 in January 2026, so it has kept climbing. Check the photo before you buy: the number on the back is the same as the base card.
8.2018 Topps Update #US1 "Warm-Up Shirt" photo variation
2018 Topps Update
| Grade | Price |
|---|---|
| PSA 10 | $3,050–$3,950 |
| PSA 9 | $1,230–$1,550 |
- Population:
- 473 PSA 10 · 351 PSA 9
Update #US1 comes in several versions beyond the base card, including a short-print variation and super-short prints of Ohtani both pitching and hitting. The Warm-Up Shirt version is the one with a steady market, and it's the cheaper way into a short-printed Ohtani flagship rookie.
PSA 10s have sold for $3,050 to $3,950 since July 2026, roughly six to seven times the base US1, with only 473 graded that high. It sits below the #700 With Bat variation because that card has the smaller population and the stronger price history.
9.2018 Topps Chrome Update #HMT1
2018 Topps Chrome Update
| Grade | Price |
|---|---|
| PSA 10 | $835–$1,115 |
| PSA 9 | $292–$416 |
- Population:
- 7,244 PSA 10 · 3,858 PSA 9
Topps Chrome Update was originally sold only at Target, and it filled in the rookies who were called up after the main sets were printed. Ohtani is card #1, the chrome version of his Update #US1. Parallels run from a value-pack Pink Refractor through Refractor (/250), X-Fractor (/99), Gold (/50) and Red (/25) to a one-of-one Superfractor; a Pink Refractor has sold for $4,250 in a PSA 10.
The base card is a solid value: PSA 10s have sold for $835 to $1,115 over the past three months, below Topps Chrome #150. The same set's #HMT32 Rookie Debut card is close behind, with PSA 10s at $917 to $1,311 and a larger population of more than 10,000.
Before the rookies: Ohtani's Japanese and prospect cards
Ohtani was a star in Japan for five seasons before he came to MLB, and his earliest cards come from there.
- 2013 BBM 1st Version #183 — a card from his first season with Nippon-Ham, and the Japanese card the market values most. PSA 10s sold 15 times between July and September 2026, for about $12,090 to $17,400, and there are 466 of them.
- 2013 Calbee Exciting Rookie #D-07 — the other key card from his first Japanese season, from Calbee's long-running snack-pack series.
- 2017 Bowman Mega Box Chrome Prospects #BCP31 — his first English-language card, with his name spelled "Otani."
Which one should you buy?
- The definitive card: 2018 Bowman Chrome #1. A PSA 9 costs about $2,000; a PSA 10 is around $5,000 and up.
- The scarcity play: 2018 Topps Chrome Sapphire #700, or the Topps #700 With Bat variation. Both have PSA 10 populations in the low hundreds.
- The best value: 2018 Topps Chrome Update #HMT1 in PSA 10, a graded chrome rookie for about $1,000.
- On a budget: 2018 Topps Update #US1 in PSA 9, around $155 to $255.
- If money is no object: the 2018 Bowman Chrome rookie autograph.
Ohtani is just as central to MLB The Show. He has 29 cards across MLB The Show 21 through 26, topping out at 99 overall, including a 2026 All-Star 99, a 2025 All-Star 99 and a 2025 Postseason 99. See every Shohei Ohtani card in MLB The Show — the most recent ones are below.
