Frank Thomas went to Auburn on a football scholarship, played a season at tight end, then turned to baseball full time. The White Sox took him seventh overall in the 1989 draft, and he debuted on August 2, 1990, hitting .330 over his first 60 games. What followed was one of the best runs any hitter has had: seven straight seasons of a .300 average, 20 homers and 100 runs, RBIs and walks, back-to-back AL MVP awards in 1993 and 1994, and a batting title in 1997. He finished with 521 home runs and a .301 average and went into the Hall of Fame in 2014, his first year on the ballot.
His rookie cards came out in 1990, squarely in the overproduction era, and almost all of them are cheap and plentiful in a PSA 10. Upper Deck left him out of its 1990 set entirely. The exceptions are a famous printing error, the low-run Tiffany parallels, and the Canadian O-Pee-Chee, and that's where nearly all the money in a Thomas rookie collection goes.
How we ranked them
We weighed three things: how iconic the card is to collectors, how scarce it really is (print run and, more usefully, how many survive in gem condition), and what it sells for today. Prices are recent sold results, rounded into ranges, so treat them as a snapshot rather than a quote. Gem rate is the share of all PSA-graded copies that came back a PSA 10. Where we could only find older population counts, we say so.
Only 1990 cards from licensed major-league sets make the ranking, including the error and factory-set versions of his Topps and Bowman cards. His college, Team USA and minor-league cards are covered in their own section at the end.
1.1990 Topps #414 No Name on Front (NNOF) error
1990 Topps
| Grade | Price |
|---|---|
| PSA 10 | $183,000 |
| PSA 9 | ~$17,000 |
| PSA 8 | ~$12,000 |
| PSA 5 | $6,000–$6,700 |
- Population:

One of the great error cards of the modern era. Early in the 1990 Topps print run, a small number of Thomas rookies came off the press without the black ink layer that carried his name and position, leaving a blank orange nameplate. Collectors who have researched it trace the original pulls to retail wax packs in New England, the East Coast and the Great Lakes, and printing experts they consulted blamed a damaged plate, since the error repeated across many sheets. It was one of the first true chase cards of the era.
PSA has graded 301 copies, and exactly one is a 10. That card has sold three times: $170,400 in December 2022, $148,840 in November 2024 and a record $183,000 at Heritage in March 2026. Below it, the most recent PSA 9 sold for about $17,000 and PSA 8s have traded around $12,000, while copies graded by Beckett have pushed higher in 2026 (a BGS 9 brought $29,280 in April). Even a PSA 5 costs more than $6,000.
Counterfeits are a real problem. Early fakes were regular cards with the name painted over; newer ones are much better. The key tell is that a genuine NNOF is missing more black ink than just the name: parts of the lower border and most of the Topps logo should be gone too, and most fakes keep the logo. A related Partial Blackless variation, where the black trim breaks off near his foot, is a cheaper cousin; PSA 8s of that version sold for $700 to $1,500 in 2026.
2.1990 Topps Tiffany #414
1990 Topps Tiffany (factory set)
| Grade | Price |
|---|---|
| PSA 10 | $2,950–$3,800 |
| PSA 9 | $450–$555 |
| PSA 8 | $160–$375 |
- Population:
- 1,241 graded · 112 PSA 10
- Gem rate:
- 9.0%
Topps sold its glossy, white-stock Tiffany version only as a complete factory set, with a reported run of about 15,000. It shows Thomas in the same Auburn uniform as the base card, but the glossy front is far less forgiving of scratches and print lines.
Fewer than 1,300 have been graded and 112 are 10s. PSA 10 prices have climbed steadily, from around $2,000 in 2024 to between $2,950 and $3,800 since late 2025. It's the most accessible way to own a scarce Topps Thomas rookie without the five-figure cost or counterfeit worries of the NNOF.
3.1990 Bowman Tiffany #320
1990 Bowman Tiffany (factory set)
| Grade | Price |
|---|---|
| PSA 10 | $2,525–$3,500 |
| PSA 9 | $250–$325 |
| PSA 8 | $100–$150 |
- Population:
- about 1,040 graded (2023)
Bowman made Tiffany versions only in 1989 and 1990, and the 1990 run is usually reported at just 3,000 sets, a fifth of the Topps Tiffany figure. The front matches the regular Bowman card, with glossy coating and white card stock on the back.
The smaller run hasn't translated into a higher price than the Topps Tiffany yet. PSA 10s have sold between about $2,525 and $3,500 in 2026, nearly double where they sat in mid-2025, and a PSA 9 costs a few hundred dollars. If you believe the print run, this is the scarcer of the two Tiffany cards.
4.1990 O-Pee-Chee #414
1990 O-Pee-Chee
| Grade | Price |
|---|---|
| PSA 10 | $2,200–$2,800 |
| PSA 9 | $65–$100 |
| Raw | $35–$50 |
- Population:
- about 460 graded (2023)
O-Pee-Chee printed the Topps design for Canada, with English and French text on the back and a much smaller run. From the front it's almost identical to the Topps card, so check the back for the French text.
The low supply has finally caught up with the price. PSA 10s sold for around $800 through 2024 and 2025, then jumped to $2,800 and $2,200 in the two most recent sales in 2026. With so few sales, that range could move quickly in either direction, but PSA 9s remain under $100.
5.1990 Leaf #300
1990 Leaf
| Grade | Price |
|---|---|
| PSA 10 | $250–$430 |
| PSA 9 | $25–$45 |
| Raw | ~$15 |
- Population:
- 23,808 graded · 4,757 PSA 10
- Gem rate:
- 20.0%
The best-known regular-issue Thomas rookie. Leaf had spent the 1980s as the Canadian version of Donruss, and in 1990 it relaunched as a premium U.S. brand with glossy photos on thicker stock, an answer to Upper Deck. Unlike the Topps card, which shows him in his Auburn uniform, Leaf has Thomas in action with the White Sox.
It's anything but scarce, with nearly 24,000 graded and one in five a PSA 10. But it's the card collectors associate with Thomas, and demand has pushed PSA 10s from around $200 in the spring of 2026 to between $300 and $430 by September.
6.1990 Topps #414
1990 Topps
| Grade | Price |
|---|---|
| PSA 10 | $140–$180 |
| PSA 9 | $15–$26 |
| Raw | $1–$3 |
- Population:
- 20,275 graded · 3,396 PSA 10 (2023)
- Gem rate:
- ~17%
The everyday version of the NNOF, with a "#1 Draft Pick" banner and Thomas in his Auburn uniform. It's one of the most plentiful rookies of the decade, and a raw copy costs about as much as a soda.
PSA 10s have sold between about $140 and $180 in 2026. It earns its place for the brand and for its link to the error card, not for scarcity.
7.1990 Bowman #320
1990 Bowman
| Grade | Price |
|---|---|
| PSA 10 | $115–$205 |
| PSA 9 | $15–$30 |
| Raw | ~$2 |
- Population:
- 3,857 graded · 660 PSA 10 (2023)
- Gem rate:
- ~17%
The regular version of the Bowman Tiffany. It's been submitted far less often than the Topps or Leaf, so its PSA 10 population is a fraction of theirs, but that reflects collector interest more than true scarcity.
PSA 10s have sold between about $115 and $205 over the summer of 2026, roughly in line with the Topps card.
8.1990 Score #663
1990 Score
| Grade | Price |
|---|---|
| PSA 10 | $75–$95 |
| PSA 9 | $17–$25 |
- Population:
- 9,860 graded · 2,415 PSA 10 (2023)
- Gem rate:
- ~24%
Score's base rookie carries a "1st Round Pick" logo and is common in every grade. PSA 10s have sold between about $75 and $95 in September 2026. It's a solid, inexpensive rookie for a team or player set.
9.1990 Fleer Update #U-87
1990 Fleer Update
| Grade | Price |
|---|---|
| PSA 10 | $45–$85 |
| PSA 9 | $11–$20 |
Fleer's late-season update set caught Thomas after his August debut. It's readily available in high grade, and PSA 10s have sold for about $45 to $85 in recent weeks, making it one of the cheapest gem Thomas rookies.
10.1990 Score Rookie & Traded #86T
1990 Score Rookie & Traded
| Grade | Price |
|---|---|
| PSA 10 | $45–$65 |
| PSA 9 | $17–$25 |
Score's traded set shows Thomas in action at first base, framed in orange. Like the Fleer Update, it's easy to find in top condition, and PSA 10s have sold for about $45 to $65 in September 2026.
Before the rookies: Thomas's college, Team USA and minor-league cards
Thomas has more pre-rookie cards than most players of his era, and a few of them are hard to find in top condition.
- 1987 Auburn Tigers "Tiger Great" was handed out at Auburn games in a small team set, reportedly about 5,000 copies. It's a very thin card, and left-to-right centering is often off.
- 1987 Team USA Pan-Am #36, with blue borders, is frequently miscut on the back and off-center top to bottom, which makes high-grade copies scarce.
- 1990 Best Birmingham Barons #1 is his best-known minor-league card. PSA 10s sold for roughly $120 to $130 in late 2025 and $350 in February 2026.
- 1990 ProCards #1116 (Birmingham) and 1990 Classic #T93 are common alternatives, with PSA 10s around $115 to $130.
- 1990 Coca-Cola White Sox, a thin team-issued set given out at Comiskey Park, is the oddball of his rookie year and is hard to find.
Which one should you buy?
- The definitive card: the 1990 Topps NNOF error, graded by PSA. Even a mid-grade copy is a five-figure purchase.
- The scarcity play: 1990 Bowman Tiffany or Topps Tiffany. Small runs, about a hundred PSA 10s each, and prices that are still rising.
- The best value: 1990 O-Pee-Chee in PSA 9, a low-population card for under $100.
- On a budget: 1990 Leaf or Topps in PSA 9 for under $50, or the Fleer Update and Score Traded in PSA 10.
In MLB The Show, Thomas has 14 cards across MLB The Show 21 through 25, with a top rating of 99 overall. That includes a Cornerstone 99 in MLB The Show 25, and a Hall of Fame 99 and a Captain 99 in 24. See every Frank Thomas card in MLB The Show. The most recent ones are below.
